Question

I am a FTM and I don’t know anything about car seats/strollers any of that. This may be a dumb question but I was wondering if there were any moms out there that could educated me on them. I want to get an infant car seat for my baby when she is first born so I can carry her to appointments easily but my husband wants to get a car seat that you can use through out the years that they can grow into. So I guess my question is if you opt for the other car seat that just stays in the car how do you carry your baby around. I know there are stroller but they just look like bassinets with wheels wouldn’t the baby kinda roll around in a stroller like that if it was moving? Sorry If I sound naive I just don’t know anything about baby products!  Also I want something she’ll fit kind of snug into because newborns are so small I don’t want to there too be too much room you know. Thanks In advanced!

I really love the infant seats for the exact reason you just stated. It’s so convenient to keep your baby in the infant seat during appointments, plus it’s easy to transfer them from the car if you can just keep them in the car seat and click it into the stroller. My sister, however, never used infant seats for her 4 kids and just kept them in a carrier for appointments, hikes, etc. Sometimes she’d use a stroller with a nice recline and roll up blankets to prevent her kids from rolling or sliding when they were really young.

Baby can be in a stroller that the seat lays flat since birth. That’s what they’re for. But I don’t recommend skipping the infant seat because I did that and I hated it so much. It was the worst thing waking up a newborn that fell asleep in the car. So I switched to the infant seat within 2 weeks. I also hate baby wearing so I never wanted to do that for the ‘quick’ trips. It’s easier to snap the infant seat onto the base of the stroller and run in and out.

We have used Britax for our children. They are top ranked in safety and the quality is outstanding. We had an infant car seat but I hated it and quickly got a convertible instead. You think it will be so handy to be able to carry your child in it, but let me tell you - it gets SO HEAVY. Even with the smallest of babies (my first was a preemie). Strollers are really easy to bring and they won't kill your back. Babies are also safer to sleep in a stroller. I would go straight for a convertible carseat and bring the stroller where ever you go. It's so much easier.

I would just get a car seat that you can use as the baby grows. You can buy 2 car seats if you want but there is no point. It's a bit easier to have the infant car seat but it's a couple hundred bucks for something they can't use for long. You can always baby wear it's easy and they love it.

With this caddy. I’m telling you this is the best. It’s so light weight and easy to use. You can open and close this thing with one hand. It’s also very sturdy. I am about to use the same one I have had for my third baby. It’s also a lot more affordable compared to a lot of systems. You can get the car set I shared in the other comment and just push a button, take out the car seat and then snap it into place in the caddy. I love it because you don’t have to wake your baby up to take them in and out of the store or something. The stroller rides very smoothly. I love it.

We used a bucket seat until baby was sitting up and no longer falling asleep in the car, then we got the convertible seat and used the stroller. I'm a minimalist with baby products but still found it helpful to ultimately have both. 
So, if you go that route, you either need a stroller and bucket seat that are compatible, or just get the stroller you want and use a carseat frame "stroller" for the infant seat (basically it's a frame on wheels and any carseat can snap onto it).
If you're planning a second child close in age, you may want to go ahead and invest in a system that can convert to a double stroller like the uppababy or city select. I didn't, and then had to buy a whole new system when I was pregnant with my 2nd.

I used a travel system(infant car seat/base/stroller) with my first three. I highly recommend this route. It’s easy just to snap the car seat into the stroller(it takes a second) and off you go. No waking a sleeping baby or harnessing/unharnessing baby. We got a convertible car seat once ours outgrew the infant car seat(around 32” tall). You honestly will be mad if your babe falls asleep and you have to wake them up just to get them out of their car seat. Infant car seats you can bring it in and let them sleep for a bit. It’s nice when you have other kids or need to put away groceries. Ours was the graco fast action folding jogging stroller and snug ride 35 car seat. I like them and used them for 6 years, stroller of course can still be used until our youngest is too heavy which is not going to be until she’s 5 or 6.

We had an infant seat for quick trips, and it was great! We used the bassinet when we went for walks. It’s safer for baby to be flat, and you can just roll up blankets around them so they don’t roll around. Some strollers, including uppababy, are safe from birth, so you don’t even need the bassinet if you don’t want it. We also used a wrap to carry him when he was brand new. As a first time mom, I get more confident buckling him in in the house where I could see everything well and then popping him into the car, instead of doing it from the side and hoping I did it right, so that’s another reason the infant seat was the right choice for us.
