I wasn’t able to breastfeed my baby from the start due to her having some respiratory issues. She’s 4 days old now, is it too late to start breastfeeding? If not how would I go about getting her to breastfeed? ￼

Find an IBCLC to work with. My son wasn’t able to latch till he was a week old due to a NICU stay. I pumped before he started latching. We ended up nursing till he was 2.

If she’s only 4 days it should be easier to get a full supply. The most important thing it nurse baby every 2-3 hours. Pumping will not empty your breast out as good as baby will. Then right after baby nurses it’s good to pump (very important to pump EVEN when milk isn’t coming out) this stimulates your nipples and tells your body to make more milk. It’s very possible their are people that get milk to come in even after their milk has dried up. The sooner after giving birth the easier it is so you have a really good opportunity. Definitely do research and I would recommend to get a lactation consultant. Also for the first few days you probably won’t get much milk because it’s mostly thicker colostrum so keep pumping for stimulation and hand expressions are very good to get the thick colostrum out.
