Are ounces punped a reflecion of what baby gets when nursing?

Even though I only get about an 1/2 an ounce to an ounce when pumping, that’s not a reflection of what my baby gets when he nurses correct? Sometimes pumping just isn’t as effective as a nursing baby?

It cannot be stressed enough that the amount of milk you able to pump is NOT ever a reliable indicator of how much milk you are producing, nor how much milk baby is taking in. The healthy breastfed baby is usually much more efficient at getting milk from the breast than a pump is. The average mom who is pumping between breastfeeding sessions can express between ONE and THREE oz per pumping session (not per breast, per session). And some doesn't react to pumping what so ever, but can breastfeed without problems for years.

NO! Absolutely not. When I had my daughter I wasn’t pumping nearly ANYTHING and I was so worried that she wasn’t getting enough. I went to see a lactation consultant who was able to weigh her before she ate and after. (Baby and I were also both struggling to figure out the latch and that was another reason I was convinced she wasn’t getting enough.) The consultant helped me with her latch and she nursed while we were there and was able to see that she’d take. In a full ounce I’m just a matter of 10-15 minutes. (She was only like 2 days old at this point). She also taught me how to hand express and for whatever reason, I was able to hand express way more than a pump ever could. One big thing the LC taught me was that the baby is the MOST effective way of removing milk and no way of pumping will ever tell you how much a nursing baby is taking in (other than weighing them on a scale). We just watched for weight gain over time and made sure we fed on demand and that her latch was good.
