Bassinet vs crib for newborn? Honest opinions please.

Question

I know all the websites say that you should have baby in a bassinet first for at least three months before moving them to a crib, but I'm honestly contemplating skipping the bassinet. I've never been a momma before, so I don't want to do anything "wrong," but my family and some friends with children say that it's something that isn't necessary as long as baby is nearby, like next room over nearby. Her nursery will literally be across the hall from us, so I'm contemplating if the bassinet for 3+ months will really be worth it when she'll be fairly close to us all the time. What are your opinions on bassinet vs crib right away for a newborn? If you did jump to using a crib first, how did you find the experience? We're not due until September so we've got time still.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends baby sleep in your room for the first 6-12 months. Studies have shown that this greatly reduces the risk of SIDS, which is why it is recommended. It doesn’t matter if baby is in a bassinet or a crib in your room though, as long as it’s a safe sleep area (flat, firm surface, nothing in there but a fitted sheet and swaddled baby on its back. So no stuffed animals, blankets, crib bumpers, etc.)

We started with our son in a bassinet in our room. He was waking every hour/2 hours. We moved him to his cot in the nursery at 6 weeks & he sleeps so much better in there (up to 6/7 hours for the 1st night sleep).

We have a bedside bassinet / sleeper and we plan to bed share. The crib we plan on getting is a convertible crib that we likely won’t even use until they’re a year old. Our bedroom is large so baby won’t have his own room until he’s probably a toddler.

We have a bassinet next to our bed on my side and plan to move our son into his crib in his nursery at 3 months if all goes as planned. I find that the bassinet in the room is very helpful and faster during the night when it’s time to feed and change him

I wouldn't be comfortable with it and it makes life harder. If you don't want to get a bassinet get a pack and play, then you can have it next to your bed and it's useful for 2ish years.

My baby girl hated her bassinet. She slept in it once. My husband and I put her down in her room in her crib every night. We can hear her if she cries, her room is a few feet down the hall from ours. Really glad I won’t have to transition her one day when she’s older. Works for us!

You might feel differently about wanting baby in another room right away after they are born. They wake super frequently and if your like a lot of new mamas, you’ll just want to be able to have them as close as possible to make sure they are still breathing or sleeping okay. New babies make a LOT of noises while they sleep and it can be scary! Plus, we bottle fed so it was super easy to set up her feeding station on my nightstand and just not even get out of bed to feed/change her.
On that note, my LO slept in a pack n play next to our bed as a newborn and we moved her to her crib in her own room once she started only waking once a night, about 11 weeks old. And now she is thriving :) good luck!

There’s really no need for a bassinet. When I was shopping for my first, the sales associate said if you want something in addition to crib then just use the pack n play as a bassinet.

As long as near by. My crib doesn’t fit through the door so bassinet was simpler for us. Hard to pass your arm through the crib bars to example tap you baby back to sleep while your in bed or to put back the pacifier…
