Solids?

Question

When should solids be introduced? My son will be 4 months old on the 27th and I have him some plain single grain rice cereal mixed with breastmilk today. My mom has been telling me for about 2 weeks he’s ready because he watches us eat really intensely and will make chewing motions and reach for our food. I had been letting him lick stuff before and would sometimes give him tiny bits of this and that off my finger too. He LOVED the cereal earlier too lol

Usually solids aren’t recommended before 6 months. If baby isn’t 4 months it’s definitely too early.

My pediatrician said no solids until 6 months.  Even then it would only be to start introducing them to it.  All calorie requirements still need to be met by breast milk or formula until 12 months.

Their digestive system isn’t ready for anything but milk until around 6 months. At 4 months, babies will watch you do practically anything, that doesn’t mean they’re ready for it

Around 6 months is the recommendation as their digestive system is still developing. Some babies are a little earlier than this based off medical advice but definitely not before 4 months.
Rice cereal is no longer recommended as a first food- it can cause issues with constipation, it is processed and contains little nutritional value (aside from added iron which you can get from other sources).
I’d talk to your paediatrician to see what they think.

American Academy of Pediatrics recommends solids around 6 months and not before 4. My daughter was 5 months on the 5th and her pediatrician thinks she’s ready, after originally encouraging waiting until 6 months. It should be a conversation with your dr as to why or why not to wait until 6 months.

At about 5 1/2 months his nutritionist said we could start purées and cereals.
