Can someone please explain this logic?

Question

"the mask don't protect the wearer, they protect those around them." 
How can something possibly work if it doesn't first protect you?
And edit to clarify where I'm coming from. I wear a mask. All the time. My issues is that the mask DOES protect you. Its literally for YOUR protection.

You got it backwards girl! Your mask somewhat protects you, but it’s real job is to prevent your respiratory droplets from escaping your immediate being and flying out onto people. The mask somewhat protects you from breathing in other peoples droplets, but unless it is a medically approved mask it doesn’t do too much to protect the wearer. That’s why people not wearing masks are considered rude and uncaring and why essential workers give them the look of death and steer clear from helping them

If you are having open heart surgery, do you want the surgeon to wear a mask or is it cool if he sneezes and coughs into your open chest cavity? 
Of course, it depends on the type of mask.
A surgical or cloth mask primarily protects vulnerable people around the wearer from whatever  respiratory germs the masked person might have.  Some masks, such as well-fitting N95 mask without a vent, protect both the wearer and those around them.  A mask with a vent only protects the wearer and does not protect those around them.
