Does long distance really work?

My boyfriend is moving about 2 hours away, we have been together 4 years and he is moving to attend a state university. We have committed to do long distance since its not that far but I’m still scared that it might not work. My question is, has anyone had a successful long distance relationship that has lasted about 2-3 years?

My now husband and I did long distance for 5 years while he was in the Navy. It was really tough. He spent 3 and a half years out of the 5 out at sea, which ment an email daily and one weekly phone call during his deployments. It admittedly almost broke us, but we made it through

It works if people relocate, my brother and his wife they met on a work assignment in New York, my brother was a tour guide for all of the out of towners and the only one who showed up with her, that ended up being the first date, he also was a New York on a work assignment for a few years, and they hit it off, they used to meet for hours each way several times, at least once a month, and one position opened up in New York, she took it, and when his job assignment was done years later after marriage and at least one kid, they move back to where she lived, had another kid and they’ve been married 16 years. My own experience with long-distance never worked, they always cheated, and I will never do it again. It can work if both partners make the effort, if it’s only one person, it ends up not working. And not to mention that he’s going to college, which means he’s probably gonna want to have the college experience, if you know what I mean. The late night parties, obviously there’s going to be women, and whether he can resist the temptation or a drunken incident or whatever the situation may be, just don’t put all your eggs in one basket. ￼￼

Only if done right and only if the two of you can handle it. Not everyone can, so it doesn’t work for them. There is no yes or no answer to this question.

My first year of college I went 10.5 hours away. I had been with my boyfriend for 7 months when I moved. After that year, I transferred to college 20 minutes away from home, but he also transferred from the local community college to a college that was an hour away. We did that for the next 4 years (he decided to do Grad school there as well). We stayed together and we travelled back and forth as much as we could. But it wasn’t easy. I’m not sure how old you guys are but for us, we were young and still had ALOT of maturing to do. We broke up a few times for a few weeks but would get back together. He finally graduated and got a job offer in another state so we both moved. But even that took so much work for our relationship because we were in a new state with no family and friends. 
My biggest advice is COMMUNICATION. Talk and actually listen to one another. Our relationship hit a lot of really rough patches because we still weren’t communicating well and nothing changed until we did. But once we did things completely changed for the better. Everyone needs to grow and mature, we just did it together and I think it made our relationship now stronger than it would’ve been if we met later in life because we wouldn’t have had all that joint growth together. 
We’re now married and our first baby is due in August. Long distance is totally doable. It’s really hard, and it’s going to take alot of effort on both your parts but if the relationship is worth it, the effort is worth it!

My now husband and I did it for about 27 months while in college. It was hard, especially because we were young, insecure and inexperienced, but we did it because we wanted everything that came afterward. I am glad we did.

My ex and I were together four years, long distance for about half. We broke up due to non distance related reasons (long story short his mom was a bitch who tried to poison me and he wouldn’t back me).
