Should a 3 year old be able to ..?

Should a child that just turned 3 be able to draw pictures ? Or would just scribbles still be appropriate at that age ?  If they are still just scribbling should I be worried ?

It depends on the kid. My husband and I have no artistic abilities and my oldest scribbled for a long time. He is 6 and within the last year or two he actually started drawing pictures and it's only been within the last year we could tell what they were. It's not something that has every really interested him he spent the more time in his toddler year playing with Play-Doh and building with blocks.

My son can draw pictures and has been able to since he was 3. But he prefers to just scribble because he says “it is more fun for me”. But if I ask for something specific he will attempt it, he is 4 now.

My son still only scribbles 🤷🏻‍♀️ he’s almost 3 1/2. That’s how he enjoys coloring, so I just let him be. I feel like kids start to learn more “skilled” coloring and things like that in preschool.

My daughter will be 3 next month and can draw smiley faces. My son is 4.5 and can only trace them, and can't really draw anything freehand. He also doesn't really like using a pen or drawing, he just has no interest in it, whereas she has been drawing on the walls since she could pick up a crayon.

My almost 4 yr old can draw straight lines and a circle...and kind of a square, but he mostly scribbles still. He doesn't like to sit and do art much as he's all about physical activities over sit down activities. However, he is showing some interest in learning how to write letters a but, though he still hasn't actually made one on his own yet.

My first was drawing pictures at 3, they were pretty impressive to me. She drew her favorite stuffed toy better than I could ever dream of drawing it lol. But my partner is pretty gifted in the drawing department so she might’ve simply picked that up from him. My pediatrician only ever asked if she could draw a straight line at either her 3 or 4 year visit.

Scribbles are normal. Don’t pressure for them to do more. Let them develop naturally. In the end it’ll work out.

Mine can draw a stick figure and circles. That’s about it. They “should” be able to draw a stick person by 3-3.5 according to some chart thingy. My daughter just started being able to at 3.5.
