Inner and outer cervix dilation???

Question

I was checked last night in labor and delivery and was told my inner cervix is closed , but my outter cervix is it a 3. What is this ? Ive never heard of it before.

I've never heard that either. I got a check at my last appt because I had been having contractions and he said I'm soft with 1 cm. I had to ask my aunt who is an ob nurse what he meant.

Think of the cervix as a funnel. I had what’s called funneling with my first pregnancy very early and was put on bed rest. I actually started dilated inner rather than outer. I had heavy bleeding and ultrasound revealed funneling. 
As you continue to thin/efface than you won’t have inner/outer anymore.
