You should never use hemp by themselves. They absorb the most liquid but they do so slowly. If you use hemp alone, the diapers will leak before they have a chance to absorb the liquid. Hemp should be used as a secondary insert under a different material that absorbs more quickly. I have been cloth diapering for 4.5 years now between three kids. I have always used one bamboo insert during the day. And at night, I have always used two bamboo inserts on top of a hemp insert. And I used Kawaii Goodnight Heavy Wetter diapers at night because they're built with deep pockets so stuffing it really full doesn't give baby gaps around the legs like a lot of diapers will do when overstuffed. Be forewarned that if you use cloth diapers at night, the night time inserts may build up a barnyard smell since baby is wearing them 8-10 hours. It shouldn't happen often. It generally happens to me about every 6-8 months. And when that happens I let them soak in the sink overnight with about 1/2 a cup of baking soda and 1/2 a cup of vinegar, then put them through the normal wash process the next day (one wash in hot water, no detergent and one wash cold with detergent.) Which takes care of the smell for another 6-8 months.

Whoops, I did write that backwards. Washing with hot water first won't bake pee and poo bacteria in because the hot water kills bacteria, but the reason is actually that it will set the stains. I did write it backwards though, thanks for the correction!

First wash is in cold water second is hot water,or else you will " cook" the pee and poop into the diaper.
