Napping problems

Makenzie

Hey mamas,

I’m in need of some serious help here. My 17 month old has been only napping once a day for a couple weeks now. She usually sleeps AT LEAST 1 hour but has been known for sleeping almost 2 too. The past week has been HELL. She wakes up for 7-7:30 while waking up numerous times throughout the night, then has been going down for her one day during the day & only sleeping 30-40 minutes. I will spend HOURS trying to get her to go back for at least another half hour with absolutely no luck whatsoever. What am I doing wrong? What could be causing this? What can I do differently? She’s miserable all day by not napping & sleeping shitty at night. I’m at a total loss.

Sincerely,

One broke down, tired mama.

For us, it was teething. Just wait until the molars come in…

Doc did say that she feels them so that very well could be part of the problem

It's probably a sleep regression

This happened to me around the same age! I just stayed consistent but would often let my daughter sleep in my bed out of desperation to get sleep. I would drive her around to ensure a decent nap. It sucked but eventually she started sleeping again. There’s always teething to blame but who knows why it happened. Good luck!

I will also just end up letting her come sleep in bed as well. I’m pregnant with #2 & so drained I give in almost every night bc this is becoming so difficult. It’s the same thing every day & I try to get her outside all morning or out & about until lunch in hopes it’ll help but no such luck.

Teething? Anyway it coyld be an ear infection? I know you said you spend time trying to get her back to sleep, have you tried just letting her be for 5-10 mins? You mentioned she is also waking at night, is that new? Has she been sleep trained? If yes, you may need to sleep train again. Another thing i learned when babe was younger is that if she is waking up and not going back to sleep within 30-45 mins. End the nap and try another one later. Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand better.

My daughter also just sits there and plays with a doll that she has in bed 🤦 I wouldn't rush to think ear infection but maybe something to keep in mind. My daughter gets no symptoms with her ear infections, just sleeps terribly! Is there a reason she wakes up at night? Or just for cuddles? I would maybe try getting her up and trying a second nap later in the day. I also wonder if she is in a cylce of just being overtired and that's disrupting her sleep. Maybe if she can catch up she will feel better. You could try going to the park or something before nap to make sure she is REALLY tired.

She has no sign of ear infection. Was just at doc last week. This started up the same day, if not a day after her appointment. She’s crabby/whiny all day long, but not seeming to be pain involved? When she wakes up after 30-40 minutes, I usually just watch her monitor in hopes she will make herself comfy & pass out again but she just sits there & whines or is just wide awake. That’s when I try putting her back down again. Waking up at night is not “new” but it is turning out to be more than usual. Sleep training has been very difficult for us. She falls asleep by mom or dad being in the room until she falls asleep.
