Why do people ask for instagram/snapchat on dating apps?

I’m new to dating apps and I’ve noticed quite a number of men who asks for my social media and I’m just a little confused. Is it to avoid cat-fishing? Or to easily cut off contact when it doesn’t work out?

I did online dating, and never gave out my phone number. I only talked to them through snap or social media until I had been on a couple dates. It protects my number so I don’t have to change it if they’re a whacko. 
Social media allowed a distance and protected some personal info. I’ve had my same number since 2001 and I refuse to change it, so I protect it. :)

Some of them are fake profiles, they want your socials to hack you.
