Apartment is not using security deposit for damages.
So about five months ago we gave our former landlord in our apartment complex a notice like the lease said we would have to. We told her the date we would be out and she told my boyfriend that was fine no trouble. We had cats and a dog so our carpet blinds all of that was ruined so we figured the deposit being 700 should cover it. About a week after we moved out she emailed both of us saying we owe them for the month of rent. When we weren’t even living there for that month. We don’t hear anything back from them after emailed them about this. Five months go by and my boyfriend got a text saying we owed them 2200. Which didn’t make any sense to me. So I go to look on the website and it has a list of everything they did to repair the apartment and what it cost. I expected t carpet charges and blinds because they were ruined. But they charged us 600 for breaking the lease even though she told us if we give a 30 day notice that we’re moving out we would be fine. And they charged us 600 dollars for removing the carpet. But they haven’t used the 700 security deposit for any of that they’re just keeping it and demanding we pay 2200 plus keeping our deposit. Which I’ve always been told they use the security deposit for that reason and sometimes it can be more but the fact that she told us before we got charged any of this that we would be fine no charges except for damages is confusing to me. And what’s even weirder is they never tried to contact the both of us while they have been charging us since we left 5 months ago. It just seems fishy as to why they aren’t using the deposit.
