My SCARIEST Pregnancy Symptom Yet 😱

Today in the middle of work, I started losing vision in my left eye which was worrisome. I called my OB who is out of town this week, but her nurse said to just go to my optometrist. I was glad she didn’t think it was an emergency, so if it didn’t warrant an L&D visit, then I would just stay home and keep an eye on it.

Then a few minutes later, my left hand suddenly went completely numb 😬. I was in the middle of typing an email when I couldn’t feel the keys anymore. At this point I PANICKED and ran out the door to go to the hospital. I could literally feel the numbness creeping up my left arm to my elbow. Then it started to happen on my face. My left nostril went numb then the corner of my left eye, spreading out toward my ear.

At this point I was like, “This is a stroke. This is definitely a stroke. I should NOT be driving!” But by then I was pulling into the hospital parking lot. Before I could get out of my car, all of the symptoms suddenly went away. I could see and feel normally! I was considering going back home when the left side of my tongue went numb 😂. “OK! Forget it, I’m checking in.”

After a couple hours of monitoring (baby and I both looked great!) and a neurology consult, the doctor said that most likely I’d experienced a hemiplegic migraine with aura which I had NEVER heard of. she said it was likely triggered by my pregnancy hormones. I was confused because I hadn’t had a headache at all, and she said, “Oh trust me, you will later!” And prescribed me migraine pain medicine.

And here I am at midnight with one of the worst headaches I’ve ever had, marveling at the medical staff and their ability to diagnose such a random thing. I’m glad it wasn’t a stroke! But I’m also not sure what to expect, if anything, in the future. I’ll be glad when my OB is back so I can bombard her with 1,000 questions 😂
