This is my 4 yo progress report.. what are your guys’ thoughts? I’m actually a little upset this is the first time I’m hearing about his “behavior”

Where do you live? This test seems very outdated. We do not test children this way in Australia.

I have an Early Education degree in preK-grade 6 and taught elementary over a decade. It’s not that he’s necessarily expected to be showing mastery of these things yet. These are skills they are working on now and over this school year and in order to show progress they take a baseline. They’re keeping you informed on his current abilities and my question would be how often will he be reassessed and will they continue sending home updated reports for you to compare. Hopefully every month or two you’ll get a new report and will see growth which is all it’s about, not what he can’t do yet. This report also gives you a specific look at what you can help him with at home. For the teacher this data will guide instruction. If I were to look at an entire preK class and see everyone knows body parts, great I can move on to other skills and not waste time teaching those they already know. In my opinion this isn’t anything negative it’s just to keep you informed which is awesome for the school to do. My district is all about data driven instruction and this is how you do it. Also the abilities they’re looking for like letter sounds although not a requirement to complete preK here would have the child super prepared for success in kindergarten.

That’s high expectations for 4 (pre-K) however, if that’s something they are concerned about then maybe have him evaluated by a professional. If he has a learning disability or attention issue, it’s good to get it early so he can have as much intervention as possible at a young age

I disagree with a lot of people I guess. I think high expectations are good. They just want to best prepare her. Maybe these are things you can work with her a little bit at home. I'm sure you'll see great improvement. Provide more structure to help improve listening and let her know when it's "quiet time". I worked with my daughter on letters for a few minutes a day for about 2 weeks. She quickly learned all 26 uppercase letters. She's 2. We will start lowercase soon. 4 is definitely an appropriate age to know a lot of these things and exhibit these behaviors. That doesn't mean she should be perfect, but shoot for 70% of the time.

The fact that you’re hearing about this for the first time is a red flag. I’m an elementary teacher and transparency with parents is a must. You should never be surprised by what is on a “progress report”. I’d ask for more frequent communication if they’re going to give out progress reports. More importantly, he’s 4. These are high expectations for a 4 year old. I’m sure he’s doing just fine! 😊

This is a basic report. This is simply stating where your child is at at the beginning of the year. It will progress as they learn the appropriate things. They're not staying that your child has issues in anything academic or behavioral. It's simply showing where they are at the beginning of the year. Definitely something they should have gone into detail for, as parents who haven't had children in school don't understand this without context.

Fuck the education system and their judgement of our children. Having to follow a rubric of questions based on who?? Some other kid? For what? To guilt parents and kill any bit of self appreciation our kids have for themselves. I never take these progress reports seriously when they’re that young. I’m sure your baby is proud of themselves and that’s all that matters right now.

They should have explained this to you. This is just a progress report, to show where he is in the beginning or the year. You’ll get them throughout the year to show his improvements. It’s not really saying anything bad. As for his behavior, it’s not really anything bad either-it’s going to take a bit for a kid to adjust to school. 
And I disagree with people saying this is too high of expectations. Before kindergarten your kid should know their alphabet, colors, body parts ext.
