How does period panties work? 
How do you wash them? 
You don’t wear a pad/ tampon? 
How often do you change panties? (My flow is light and short) 
I’ve been wanting to look into them but I don’t know how they work so someone help a girl out 😂😭

Period panties comes in all absorbencies, colors, shapes and sizes, from g-string to “granny panties”.
They are like a normal panty with a reusable pad built into the crotch. Because of the modern materials, they are typically much thinner and less noticeable that a reusable pad. The absorbent gusset is made from multiple layers. 
The top layer (closest to your vulva) is soft, keeps you dry, moisture wicking and is anti-microbial. 
The bottom layer (outside) is leak proof or leak resistant. 
The layer/s between the inside and outside has a material the absorbs large amounts of fluid, locks it inside and locks in smells.
Every manufacturer has their own washing instructions. Some needs to be rinsed, some soaked, some just washed, almost all of them on gentle cycles, no harsh chemicals, and most must be air dried. This can take a while, so multiple panties are recommended.
Depending on the absorbency that you buy, they can absorb a whole lot more than a pad or a tampon, or be just like a panty liner.
There is even a company that makes period swimwear. From reports, it sounds like they work fine, and does not leak at all in the water (which is astonishing), but it sags between your legs when you get out of the water from all the water it absorbed. It also stays wet longer, so you need to get out of it after swimming to minimize the yeast and irritation risk.

My daughter uses them, she loves them! You wear them for the day or night (my daughter has a few pairs and changes them in the morning and in the evening), rinse them out in a bucket or under the tap and then put them in the washer machine, just like normal underwear. I do wash those separately to everything else though because I don’t want the residual going through everything else in the washer. They should work perfectly for you as you said you have a light flow.
