Postpartum essentials?

Question

What were your postpartum essentials momma’s? What do you recommend, what did your hospital supply you with, and what are some things you wish you would have had at the hospital? Give me all the details! Did you like mesh undies + pads + ice pads? Tell me your postpartum “diaper” routine lol. I want to know everything! Any other postpartum advice or tips would be helpful too. My first was a scheduled C-section for breech, so I didn’t need anything to entertain me during labor. Overall, I brought way more than I needed to the hospital. I used hospital gowns the whole time and was glad I did (a lot of general fluids, blood, breastmilk, etc). My partner was able to go home daily, so he didn’t need much either.
It seems like every woman feels differently about them, but I LOVED the mesh undies. I used them for weeks postpartum until I stopped bleeding. The hospital gave me a handful and I bought a small box online. I ran them through the wash and they mostly held up (had to throw some out for falling apart). I also found the spray bottle very useful, the hospital gave me 2, so I didn’t need to buy more.
I never used an abdomen support belt for my C-section like I see someone women do. The hospital didn’t give one and I didn’t buy one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

After my daughter I wore the always discreet underwear (basically a diaper) and it was actually pretty comfortable. And definitely ice pads! Those were my absolute favorite postpartum item. They gave me a couple extra at the hospital but this time around I plan on buying extra because I loved them so much. I also used tucks hemorrhoid cooling pads to help with the itchy feeling from the stitches.

Dermaplast, Tucks pad, cold perineal pack, and extra large thick maxi pads I bought off of Amazon were my saving grace. I bought a pack of the diapers/panties but I didn’t like the feeling on my belly after just giving birth so I liked to wear the large pads like they give you in the hospital instead. Also I wore granny panties and really stretchy pants for the first couple weeks 😂. I also loved my microwaveable warming pad. Colace and extra strength Motrin afterwards were musts as well.

Dermaplast spray!!! A peri bottle. Ibuprofen. Go ahead and have nipple balm ready and those ice/heat packs for the boobies to help with aching and prevent mastitis. One overlooked item is chapstick. I was so dry postpartum. And a good water bottle to keep ice water cold. I hated our mesh undies at the hospital. They didn’t absorb so I felt like I was just sitting in fluids all day. I got some depends and liked that much better. Didn’t even need a whole pack.  After that I switched to heavy flow pads and worked down until it was over. Get a postpartum support girdle/top/belly band/leggings. Something that compresses your abdomen. I had the blanqi leggings (interesting to wear with a diaper) and Ingred & Isabel band from target. I really do feel like it helped my uterus contract back down and gave extra abdominal support for those weakened muscles.

KNIT UNDIES!! Grab all the knit underwear you can from the hospital, clear out your room when you get discharged because they are a LIFE SAVER!! I had some left over and I used them for periods when I got them back! Much better to throw those away than to worry about staining your own undies. Another huge thing I have to suggest is a donut/neck pillow or a small boppy. I had two boppys for my daughter and I sat on the smaller one, takes off the pressure of your peri area ESPECIALLY if you had an episiotomy.

Frida mom has a postpartum kit. I loved it! It Had everything I needed, mesh underwear, instant ice maxi pad, perineal cooling pad liners, perineal healing foam and a upside down Peri spray bottle and a little bag to keep it all in. You can buy all of it separate as well if need more of anything.

This is a little later post partum but I put nursing tops on my registry! The CUTE ones like from latched mama. I enjoy being able to nurse discreetly without a cover 🥰👚
