Does Gestational diabetes cause big babies or the insulin does?

I just got a call from my doctor that I failed the 3 hour test. I took this test 3 weeks ago and they just called me today but I’ve been eating sugar like crazy lately, actually I’ve been eating very unhealthy these past few weeks. I’m 34 weeks now and I’m wondering what actually causes the babies to come out big. Is it the insulin or the GD Alone?

If you don’t keep your sugar levels down it can cause baby to get too big too fast. Insulin doesn’t cause big babies.

Not controlling your blood sugar causes the big babies. But you shouldn’t be eating crazy amounts of sugars whether you have GD or not. It is unhealthy

If your pancreas doesnt function well enough to process the sugar and flush it through your kidneys and excrement, the excess sugar will dump into the placenta...thats what causes the baby to be big. Insulin is the hormone that processes the sugar, if your body doesnt make enough of it through your pancreas, youll need supplements eg shots. Thats not what makes the baby big though, it's the excess sugar. So it's important to manage your diet.

I was not on insulin so my GD was diet controlled and my baby was almost 11 lbs born C-section. BUT I’ve heard of lots of women having normal sized babies even with GD. I think I’m not a common case. The growth scans always showed him large and everyone kept saying it can be off but mine wasn’t lol don’t stress though, it doesn’t do any good to stress about it and just change up your diet now going forward and your doctor should refer you to a nutritionist or dietician. You’ll just need low sugar and low carb but you’ll still want to eat healthy carbs. It’ll be OK!
