Is it safe to flush tampons? (Read description first)

I use playtex tampons and it says they are biodegradable. I have a strong plumbing system so I don’t have to worry about it clogging (my mom and sister have been flushing them for years).
But is it bad for the environment?

The only thing that goes down the toilet is toilet paper Even if it says flushable or biodegradable it is not to be flushed 
It does bad damage to the pipes and the water treatment systems 
Just put them in the bin

The only thing you should flush is toilet paper. No tampons, paper towel or wipes even the ones that say flushable

A few years ago my neighbour's house got flooded with sewage. We lived towards the bottom of a hill in an older part of town, so the houses all had new plumbing but the sewage pipes were OLD. Someone further up the hill had been flushing their tampons, over time they got caught in a u-bend, and caused everyone's sewage from up the hill to back up into my neighbour's house. He had to replace all of the floors, kitchen cabinets, furniture, and appliances because it was knee deep sewage. 
If you're buying biodegradable tampons to try to be more environmentally friendly I imagine they give you instructions on how to compost them? If you can't compost them at home, if you're flushing them or throwing them in the bin, they aren't going to degrade as intended. You're green signalling or supporting a company to green signal without actually doing anything that supports the environment. 
If the environment is important to you, switch to diva cups or reusable pads / period underwear. Pads and tampons create waste - the other options don't. Don't flush your tampons.

Your pipes /might/ be ok, but this is a huge issue for municipal plumbing. Just put them in the bin. Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed.

I flush them. Usually in public and occasionally at my house. I know you’re not supposed too. But 🤷🏻‍♀️ I cant stand putting them in the trash. 😂
