New electric space heater smells like chemicals

We bought a new electric space heater for my daughter’s play room because it gets really cold in there. My husband has been in there with her several times over the past week… Probably amounting to 8 to 10 hours. I went in there today while the heater was on and it smelled so strongly of chemicals. I was pissed and asked why he never left the room or opened the window and he said he didn’t think the smell was concerning.

My question is - have any of you ever experienced this with a new electric space heater? Do you know what that smell is and whether it might be harmful? It reminds me of the smell you get when burning off a brand new oven.
