I saw this on the news this morning and something inside of me started to boil. I think it is because it is a rape trial. So now his trial is pushed back again!
Edit: I was not trying to say that he shouldn’t at all! thank you in advance for explaining!!!! I didn’t quite understand why it would be beneficial.

I’m not sure I understand the outrage. I think it’s in everyone’s best interest that he have a lawyer that can communicate with him in his native language. If he’s guilty, and ends up getting a mistrial due to a language barrier, that would be cause for outrage, I think.

If roles were flipped and you were accused of a violent crime in a country where you do not speak the language, would you feel like an interpreter was sufficient or would you prefer a lawyer who spoke your language?

Everyone has a right to an attorney, and he deserves to have one that speaks his language. I think what's important to remember here is that lawyers don't just fight for you to walk away free, they negotiate deals and offers for the client to go to jail if he pleas xyz and what not. So it's important for even guilty people to get a lawyer. That way he's able to fully understand what's going on, what he's agreeing to, etc. If for some reason their language barrier caused an issue with the trial and he was found not guilty, that's it. He's done and walks free and never has to pay for his actions. A Spanish speaking lawyer is beneficial to everyone in this situation.

I don’t see the issue. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty and deserve a fair trial where they feel they are not being misrepresented . We want his sentencing to be fair and impartial. Everyone should be able to communicate at a high level with their representation

I get it, he has a right to know what’s happening in the court room and what our laws are. I’m just confused at the fact that he has an interpreter so why does he also need a Spanish speaking lawyer? Couldn’t he just use the interpreter to speak to the lawyer and ask questions?
