Is it rude to call someone "love" or "darling" who is older then you?

I work in a nursing home and this bothers me a little bit. We have a new 19 year old who has started, she is lovely. Although she tends to call our elderly patients "love" & "darling". Even our patients are getting the hump with it. 
I mean it's no biggie but it can be patronising to some others. I wouldn't like a young person calling me love 🙄 
We've been trained here to never use such words as they can be taken the wrong way. People don't listen but it's a little annoying

I don’t use pet names in a work setting. Tacky af. Idc who your clients are-unless they’re babies keep it respectful.

Yes it is. I’ve worked in an assisted living facility for10+ years and every training says not to call anyone by pet names. You call them by the name they asked to be called. It’s unprofessional & demeaning.

I think they are condescending either dynamic. I’ve had older coworkers call me “sweetie” or “honey” and they are trying to come off superior to me. I’m not stupid. We are doing the same job and some of them I am higher in rank and 20 years younger.

Yes and you are not supposed to do it in the workplace. As an ex cna and caregiver we were told in school not to do it with clients especially.

It’s only rude if they’ve been asked not to use the terms by the person being spoken to. If it’s not allowed by management is a different issue all together. When I visited down south I was tickled when a gas station clerk called me honey pie, I thought it was adorable because you never hear anything like that where I’m from. It’s also an easy way to communicate if you haven’t yet learned a persons name and it’s not gender specific. So there is not one answer, it can be rude or it can be harmless depends on each persons opinion.

It’s rude. My manager used to do it to customers. She was older than me, but she would call people even older than her “darling,” “love,” and “princess.” It was so fucking weird. 
Then one day she called the wrong woman “princess.” It was epic and I’m glad I got to watch it 🤣🤣🤣

I call everyone hon. I worked in customer service for over a decade and only a handful of customers nicely asked that I don’t call
Them that. I didn’t take offense and just apologized and all was well. 
For me, i don’t think it’s patronizing or anything: it’s a way of connecting with the person your chatting with, especially in a situation where she’s caring for another person.

I’m only 23 but I hate when someone my age or younger  (usually fast food employees) call me love or darling. It’s just odd to me. Like we’re the same age why are you calling me this? Lol
