Should I take colostrum to the hospital?

I have quite a bit of colostrum stocked up and I’m not sure if I should be taking it to the hospital when I go in for the birth. Or how much I should take with me?

Definitely! Although check to see if they have anywhere to store it. I work mother/baby, but due to Covid patient belongings (including breastmilk) can’t come out of the rooms. I’ve had many patients bring colostrum with and it’s very helpful to have!

They didn't have a freezer we could use so I left it at home and got hubby to go collect it after birth when I was too tired to breastfeed.

I brought mine and they stored it in the freezer and had it ready for when baby arrived 🙂

I had collected about 5 ozs of colostrum the week before I delivered. I started once I was diagnosed with late on set GD and knew baby girl was likely to have blood sugar issues at birth. I’m glad I did. I didn’t take any with me but her first sugar was 26 while still in recovery I called a neighbor and had her bring the colostrum to us. While I started nursing immediately her blood sugars didn’t improve much and she was so sleepy. The nurses all literally congratulated me and celebrated my neighbor when she walked in with the lunch bag of colostrum. We started syringe feeds after each nursing session. We did end up needed and IV glucose drip but only for 12 hours! But we didn’t have to use formula to supplement! The nurses said because I did this I prevented my 36wk baby from having to be transferred to a NICU! Not saying collecting before is right for everyone just sharing how it helped me last week!

If they have a way to store it sure! If they don’t you could also take a very good cooler with just a serving or 2. I would only take an amount to tide you and baby over until someone could run home and grab you more if you need it

I got a few more weeks before I’ll collect mine. If its in freezer do u take it out to thaw at room temp when baby is born?

My hospital didn’t have a way to store it so check that first.  I left it home and figured I would have someone bring it if it was needed.

I would for sure! I forgot to bring mine and my baby ended up going straight to the NICU. Huge mistake 🤦‍♀️
