I had two miscarriages around that stage and both did start with brown spotting that increased and turned into full on red bleeding with painful cramps. I didn’t need a D&C either time. My doctor just requested follow up blood work to see that my hcg decreased back down to zero.

My first pregnancy I miscarried naturally at 8 weeks. I spotted for sooo long. I had to keep going back to make sure my levels were dropping. Took about 2 months to go completely to zero.

Yes I had light brown spotting at first then it started to turn red. I ended up having to have a d&c.

When I miscarried my first pregnancy, I had light brown spotting around 5 weeks but it progressively got a little more, a little more, and started to gradually turn to rears a spotting and then full out red bleeding with lots of pain and discomfort at 6 weeks on the dot when I passed my miscarriage at home.  Did not need any medical intervention, but did see my doctor afterward just to confirm and talk with her. 
I will say that with my next two pregnancies I had spotting around the same time but it didn’t progress to get heavier and I had two healthy boys from those pregnancies even with the spotting.  Just saying in case you are experiencing spotting but not certain it is a miscarriage.
