How old was your child when they became aware that people die (and started asking about it)?

I explained to her around 2 that everyone will die. That is why we should be nice to people and  cherish them while they are still here. I try to normalize death and not make it scary. She didn’t seem to quite get the concept at the time. 
I told her previously she will get all my jewelry when I die. When she was looking at my jewelry on my arm and she said, I will get these when mommy dies. Then, I’ll say bye bye. She started crying because she realized what happens when people die. (She had just turned 3).

My 4 and 5 year old brother and sister understand it. My step mom died in June so they had to know. I don’t think they fully understand but they know mommy isn’t here anymore and really only ask for her when they’re in trouble or upset

I said 2-3, but only because mine asked why she old had one grandpa and why my husband only has a mom and no dad. She brings it up every so often, and we told her it happens and it’s sad but they’re in heaven.
