Marriage counseling with a pastor??

Hi, married couples I know have great success seeing their pastor for marriage counseling. My marriage could use some help right now. I’m not a Christian but open to it. How does it work? Is it free? How do I find one?

Neither of us are religious but our resources directed us to a Christian counselor and it was just weird. It was just really unhelpful. I recommend going to a trained professional couples counselor that isn’t affiliated with any religion.

I think if you are religious or if you go to church you should reach out to the pastor there. Otherwise a pastor may not just see you if you’re not a member of their church. If you need marriage counseling go to a family therapist.

My husband and I went for counseling (premarital) at my church. We had weekly sessions with a couple that have been pastors in that church over 20+ years. It was great because I could call/text the wife with issues and he could do the same with the husband so we weren’t restricted to just our 1 hr session each week. They also shared their own experiences with their marriage which helped to show us that marriage isn’t going to be perfect and fairytale at all times. 
The foundation of counseling is Bible scripture so if you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and you don’t believe the Bible as truth, idk how much Christian counseling will do for you even if it is free.

If you aren’t religious, seeing a pastor for counseling may not be very beneficial as a lot of recommendations will likely be biblically based. I highly recommend finding a licensed professional counselor in your area who specializes in marriage, couples, and family counseling.

If neither of you is Christian a pastor may not help you as much as a therapist. While it is free, and I'm sure they'd agree to see you, they'd be confused about how they can help you.
The reason a priest can help members of their church community is because they are a spiritual leader who can lead them into the relationship with God and each other that helps them have a stronger relationship, but without the God portion a pastor isn't a therapist who can give you communication tools and coping mechanisms that most couples want.

We did “relationship retreat” with our couple friends through one of their churches. We’re not religious so the counseling parts weren’t helpful to us. If you’re not religious, going to religious based counseling probably won’t be as beneficial. I’m sure something is better than nothing, but it probably won’t be as beneficial if it’s not something you align with.
