What age do kids shower themselves ?

My 5 1/2 year old has been telling me he wants to shower himself. I normally let all my kids do it alone and then I go in and wash them myself because I’m sure they don’t do it correctly. My oldest has been pretty much begging me to stop showering him but I feel like he’s too small 🥺 I also want to respect him because he’s very shy when my husband or I shower him. What age do kids normally shower by themselves?

Well tell him to show you how he cleans himself and if he does a good job then he can show by himself.    If he doesnt do a good job remind him what to do and then tell him as long as he does that he is good to go on his own.    If he wants to that's fine just make sure he understands the way to wash.

Did you show him how to clean properly. I know hes 5 but he approaching the age he should know how to bathe and learn to wipe correctly. If he spends the night elsewhere it gonna be more appropriate for him to know and do it alone

If he’s asking I would let him. If you’ve shown them how to wash then give him the autonomy to try it on his own.

As long as he doesn't have long hair he's probably capable of it. My 5.5 girl can shower herself well except for her hair. You can also compromise and only have dad help him as he seems to be showing signs of wanting privacy.

Such a bittersweet moment 🥺 growing up 😂 I feel you momma but you have to let kids learn and experience things in the world, I vote let him try it out and see how it goes, maybe sit on the toilet and assist if needed

We started letting my stepson do everything, brush his teeth, do his hair, shower alone at about 5 1/2 - 6. We then found out he wasn’t brushing correctly and had to have cavities filled (he hated that experience) and we had a talk with him about how important it is that he do these things correctly and went back to sitting in the bathroom while he brushed and coming in to wash him, after about a month of that he started to understand that he didn’t want us in there he wanted that private time which is understandable, and he took it more seriously. I think letting them try, and then discussing the consequences of not doing things correctly is what helps them understand, but it also all depends on the child and if you think they can do that on their own.

My kids bathe there self even oldest 9 and my 2 year old I watch him bathe and than go over him again when he is done I also go wash my oldest again too just to make sure she washes properly and didn’t miss anything it’s all when you start to teach them and they maturity level

I bathed myself and my 2 year old sister at 5. He’s obviously ready if he’s asking. Just let him do it and tell him if he doesn’t do a good job, it’ll go back to the old way.

My daughter is 6 and she’s been showering herself for awhile now you just teach them how and give them the tools they need to do so some days I’ll go in and wash her hair really good just in case but other then that I respect her wanting to do it alone

My daughter did around 4-- i still turned the shower on and got the temp right- i just had her holler when she was ready for me to come do her hair because it was really long. As another commenter said- you can have him show you how he would wash- top to bottom- with clothes or swim trunks on if he wants. If he looks like he's mostly got the hang of it i would definitely let him take care of it.
