Scared to start birth control

Okay so today is the first day of my period so i am supposed to start my birth control. i have never been on the pill and i am scared of gaining weight or having really bad acne.I know it is different for everyone but i am scared to take it. I am sexually active and i will take them as a method of contraception. Any tips for newbies like me?
