How long is too long to be in a relationship before getting married?

My boyfriend and I have been dating since 2017. I'm now 23 and he's 29. All of my other siblings got married within the first year or two of dating and I'm not really sure what to think about it. We've had a lot of ups and downs in the relationship since we both have mental health issues. I've also now been living with him since October of 2020. I don't have any experience with this sort of thing. My parents are divorced and neither of them have had a healthy relationship so I have no idea what's considered "normal". He jokes about calling me his wifey or considering himself my spouse... Should I just keep waiting and let the proposal come naturally or should I try to bring it up?

Personally I don't think there is such a thing as too long of a relationship before marriage. That really sounds like a personal issue. If that's what's important to you then you need to have a more serious conversation with your partner about marriage. I was engaged in a relationship for 7 years, it didn't work out, but I was in no way in a hurry to be married

You guys should be talking about future plans…and a timeline. You should go read premarriage counceling questions online because they are going to help u understand if u and your bf are a good fit… especially since u didnt have good example of healthy relationships. You can also look up signs youre in a  toxic relationship on youtube or pinterest. Marriage is about choosing a prtner to build an adequate life with..: its not about keeping up with the joneses. Do your homework.

There isn't a too Long. A piece of paper doesn't change the love between two people. I used to dream of getting married and having a wonderful wedding. I've come to realize that's not in the cards for me. Sadly if your on odsp or wanting to get onto it you cannot be married where I live. Well you can but your partner has to basically become your guardian bc your disabled it's stupid. At first I was really bummed out but than I really thought about it. Having a wedding doesn't change how I feel about my partner. It changes nothing. To me my partner is my husband, not legally but emotionally. If marriage is really something you truly want be open and honest and have a conversation with your partner. It's better to be upfront and honest and have communication now than regret it later.

my husband & i started dating in Jan 2017 (i was 22 & he was 23) & married two years later. I think in your case, your age played a factor since you were pretty young. however, i don’t think it’s a bad idea to bring up what the future holds for you guys & see if marriage is something your bf wants.

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 5 years now. We’ve talked about getting married and I expect him to propose one day but I’m not rushing him. I’m not rushing getting married because we love each other and it’s just a legal paper and a new last name. If you want to get married, you need to communicate what you want. Just sit down and tell him that you’d like for him to propose this year and you’re ready to start the next stage of your relationship.

I got married twice. First time after 9 months the second after a year and some. My brother got married after 13 years with his gf and my sister was with her man 2 years before they got married. My dad was with his gf 9 years before they got married. Everyone is different. There’s no rush and no such thing as too long. Just do you, enjoy dating and when the time is right it will come up naturally.
