Husbands birthday

So, my husband is turning 31. We have been married for 5 months, and we are the kind of people that thankfully have everything we need. However, my husband before we ever met racked up a lot of debt. So as we go half on mortgage and groceries. I pick up the rest of the bills. My husband lives paycheck to paycheck. I have paid off maxed cards from before we met and do what I can. But would it be insincere to give him $1,000 for his birthday as well as a care package of all of his favorite goodies? That way he can use it to catch up. I wanted to pay off his car but not sure how to. So this was my next idea
