3 year old low blood sugar episode-UPDATE
My boy is 3, will be 4 in July. He eats chicken nuggets, turkey hot dogs, peanut butter jelly sandwiches and Mac n cheese. Occasional hummus and guacamole. Green pea snap crisps and cheese. I actually wrote out what he does eat and it’s like 30 things. Anyways. I’m tired of making him a different meal than my 8 month old, my husband and I.
So last night I made a chicken and vegetable skillet recipe. Not spicy. I made a side of quinoa. I put this in a divided plate with a side of shredded cheese. He tried the cheese and instantly spit it out cause it wasn’t his “normal cheese”. Mild cheddar is his groove. This was shredded Italian blend. He refused dinner. Said everything was “ew” without trying it and got up from the table. We’ve tried everything to convince him to take a bite of something. No amount of bribery works. He also skipped afternoon snack yesterday-which isn’t uncommon. But he was hungry at 4. So he didn’t eat dinner and went to bed.
He slept from 740-825. That was insane. I was honestly a bit worried. He never sleeps that late. His normal wake time is 630. When he did wake up, he was lethargic and sweaty. Took his temperature-no fever. He went potty and I asked if he was hungry. He said yes. Walked a few steps and laid down. I said okay come on buddy let’s eat breakfast and he crawled to the living room, laid down and started going back to sleep!!! That’s when I became alarmed. I grabbed a pouch and pulled him into my arms and started giving him the pouch. His little arms and legs were jittery.
Then I carried him into the kitchen were he ate 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, a banana, handful of blueberries and 2 handfuls of cheez it’s. He slowly got better. He’s now completely normal.
I guess my question is for the people who say this is dinner eat it or don’t…..Do your kids ever have an episode like this? Because I don’t think I can morally do that again! My husband is like oh eventually he’ll learn. And I’m like well that was scary to me and I don’t want to do like permanent damage to his health because he’s going periods of not eating.
Update: thank you for commenting. I took him to the doctor and he agreed it was a hypoglycemia incident from skipping snack and dinner. He said I could still only offer 1 meal (what everyone else is eating) but if he refuses give him something small before bed. SolidStarts is amazing. I’ve been using it on for my 8 month old. So educational!!! Last night I made dinner and told him he couldn’t leave the table til he tried a “mouse bite of something”. I gave him a safe food too. He ate his cheese then screamed for 10 minutes before trying quinoa AND LIKING IT!
