Who do you agree with?

Question

We have a 6 year old daughter who has a very amazing imagination. She has a million stuffed animals and her favorite game is saying it's one of their birthdays, setting up ALLLLL her toys all over the house for their birthday, having me and her dad celebrate, etc.
The only problem I see with this is when it's someone's actual birthday or a time to celebrate she doesn't care much and will say it's her stuffed animals birthday.
She did this for my birthday and her dads (we didn't care), and for her baby sisters. She did it on holidays. Now a family member we haven't seen in years (her aunt) is coming to visit tomorrow and I told her how excited we all are and how I'm going to be cleaning the house for our guest.
To which she said I upset her because tomorrow is her stuffed animals birthday and she will make a mess in the house for it.
I told her no, you can play that any other day but tomorrow we will be celebrating seeing your aunt. Please don't overshadow it with your stuffed animals birthday.
She's now mad at me and her dad said she's a kid and I should let it go but it feels so rude whenever a celebration is going on and she just doesn't care?

Hmm. Id definitely begin teaching her to value and appreciate others and celebrate others. I think 6 is a good age to start teaching her to be compassionate, share, and honor other people and events especially if its an imaginary thing she plays often. She can go one day and embrace family. I would ask her to contribute in her own way… maybe a drawing, or preparing a dinner or tea party, or something aunt centered. Shes old enough to start learning. She wont be able to just do what she wants in preschool or kindergarten etc so she needs to start at home.

She's 6 and she's a child who wants to play with her toys, embrace the imagination! It's amazing what kids come up with, seeing their minds come to life! Let her play Birthdays if she wishes, I'm sure the Aunt will love to play a short time too! It's not rude- imo could be worse, she could be glued to a screen of some kind!

You should be celebrating her having the imagination. There's going to be a day where she loses that imagination. The day she loses her imagination is the day you have to go buy her a tablet or some type of device that keeps her entertained for hours.. why don't you talk to your husband about making her a playhouse where she can throw birthday parties for her stuffed animals in that house.

Honestly even if she wasn’t into her stuffed animal’s birthdays her attention span to care about the relative is legit 20 minutes of less. So her stuffed animals can have their “birthday”

Sometimes it’s ok to be selfish and to want a nice adult day! My life revolves around my son, my husband and I play cricket and football until we’re exhausted! Sometimes it’s ok to say ‘you know what, for one day let’s try something different’. She’s 6, her imagination isn’t going to crumble and her life won’t implode if she can’t get all of her stuff out for one day.

She is just a kid after all, and probably doesnt realize that her family members birthday may be more important than her stuffed animal. She probably does care and values her animal more, hence why shes so upset. But maybe tell her that you can celebrate it another day, or maybe do a small celebration for her toy, but then dedicate the rest to her aunt

The aunt will probably enjoy your daughter’s play! Kids don’t have to stop playing just because someone visits. Saying hey and maybe having a meal or something with aunt is plenty in my opinion. She’s 6. Let her have fun. You can teach her about celebrating others, but even birthday parties and holiday gatherings don’t last long nor do kids just sit around and do nothing.

She’s little she’s not gonna care about the same things you care about. Her attention span isn’t going to work like that either just tell her she can but make it a little smaller so there’s still space for everyone
