For any parent out there thinking “should my toddler be able to recite their ABC’s by now?”. The answer is NO. First of all learning the ABCs is just not that big of a deal and it’s nothing special.
It’s no different than memorizing colors, or shapes, or construction vehicles, or animal names/sounds, but for some reason we have put this ONE MEMORIZED SKILL on a pedestal and we use it as THE measurement to judge early childhood learning against.
Parents have been fed the idea that remembering a particular set of symbols is a massive developmental milestone in early childhood when frankly, it’s not. Early childhood is for learning important skills –social skills, life skills – not memorizing some symbols. 
What we need to put the brakes on is worrying ourselves sick because a young toddler doesn’t know their ABC’s or numbers. And then the subsequent pressure being put on these kids to master a skill that’s really not that important (yet).
Early readers don’t become better readers. Early academics don’t mean greater academic success.
Learning the ABCs early is not an indication of future academic success. In fact, being forced into overly academic situations too early can have long-lasting NEGATIVE effects on kids.
Instead, turn your efforts to the skills your toddler really needs to learn:
-taking risks
-empathizing
-questioning
-learning to think and reason
-discovering how to problem solve
-imagining and creating
-self-regulating
What is the best way to develop these skills? 
Play, independent play.

I’ve worked in the childcare industry for 10 years now, and I’ve never met a 21-22 month old to know their abcs 🙃🙃 at-least at the centres I’ve worked at

Holy shit. I would never have guessed that anyone expected a 21 month old to know the whole ABCs. My little one says tons of words and interacts well with other little ones and adults. I personally think learning skills (she can put her shoes on by herself, usually on the correct feet even!) and learning useful words to ask for things or describe things is much more important at the moment. Anyone can memorize something, actually understanding why or how to use it takes them getting to an age where it makes sense to them.
I have high expectations for my kiddo, but she's already talking up a storm and I didn't as a kid, until about 3 yrs old and my parents said I pretty much spoke in complete sentences. Every kid different 😊

Kids at this age develop different skills at different rates. My oldest loved practicing and memorizing letters, numbers, colors, etc at this age. My June baby knows some of these things, but truly doesn’t “love” memorizing the info like my oldest did….BUT my June baby is much more verbal and physically coordinated than my oldest was at this age.
I know it’s hard not to compare or worry, but truly, our June babies do not need to have any pre-academic info or skills mastered just yet.
