Should I get my service dog anyway?

I suffer from multiple mental disorders that greatly impact my daily life and Drs told me a service dog would greatly benefit my healing journey. My mother is narcissistic and contradicting. Made me get rid of my cat i had for years “because of couches and grandma’s allergies” 1. My cat prefers carpet to couches 2. Grandma rarely comes to visit and 3. My brother has 3 lizards in 3 different tanks…..why cant I have 1 animal which is now technically a medical necessity? I pay rent too btw….

Honestly no, if you are living in someone else’s home who does not want a cat or dog you should not get one. Especially a service dog that you would have to put thousands and thousands of dollars into getting the proper training and then need every household member on board with keeping up that training. If I were you I would wait until you’re on your own or at least until you can get everyone in the house on thr same page.

Lizards are significantly different than cats or dogs. For one, they don’t need training. They are not expensive to feed. They don’t require tons of attention. They don’t have fur and don’t scratch or bite furniture. I would follow the rules of your household, until you are out on your own. Or explore other options for support animals that your mom might be more likely to consider.

Move out before you get a dog. Most places won’t even let you without your landlords permission.
