U.K. based scans

Hi, at what point should you go for your first scan?

Also, can you contact a specific midwife clinic / hospital and self referral or does your gp have to do it?

Thanks

In my area you self refer to one of the 2 local hospitals and then the Midwife contacts you to make your booking in appt. Booking in used to be at 8 weeks but with Covid its been closer to 10. Then I got a letter with the date of my 12 week scan which can actually be anywhere from 11.5 - 13.5 weeks x

Privately, you can have a scan whenever you want but you pay around £80 for it.Through the NHS, your midwife/GP should arrange a 12 week dating scan, and then an anomaly scan at 20 weeks. If your pregnancy is higher risk and/or you need additional growth scans, these get arranged by the midwife/antenatal clinic in the hospital after referral from the consultant. You may just have one-off growth scans or arranged ones, I had one every 4 weeks from 28 weeks.

You should contact your GP to tell them your pregnant then they will get in touch with a midwife who will get in touch with you, you don’t see a midwife until around 8 weeks and your scan can be anytime between 10-14 weeks xx

I informed my GP who put my on the list for the midwife. They then contacted me at roughtly 8 weeks to arrange my booking appointment. The 12 week scan is your first, unless there are issues. You can also organise an early scan privately if you don't want to wait.

Your midwife is usually the one attached to your gp surgery. They make the referral for your scan and its usually between 10-12 weeks
