Do narcissists know they’re narcissists?

Question

Just curious how many people think a narcissist knows and realizes they are one. My ex is 100% a narcissist but plays dumb like he isn’t intending on his actions and words to come off as such. But I know it’s always been a game to keep me as a convenience, so he can do as he pleases on the side. 
I must say, I’m very happy to finally be free.

I think in most cases, a person who has narcissistic personally disorder genuinely CANNOT understand that anything they do is wrong because they genuinely think there is nothing wrong with them and that it’s the people around them that are wrong

NPD is a spectrum. One could or could not be aware. A relative has no idea, truly. Another person I know with NPD does. 
Back when I didn’t understand NPD, I thought they all knew and all were evil, but…idk, the more I understand my relative, the more I get that he doesn’t. His ego is so fragile that he’s all bravado in the front, but just a mess on the inside. 
Abusers do generally know that they’re dirtbags, but not all people with NPD are abusers.

I don’t think they have single clue that what they are doing could possibly be wrong. Like, normal behavior is just SO outside their realm that they think they are reasonable and legit. That’s what makes it so hard and why those relationships don’t last. They legit don’t get that their behavior is no ok.

Some do, some don’t. NPD is one of those things that just can’t really be helped. I know a therapist that has said there is no point in therapy for narcissists. It only helps them become better narcissists.

My sister was married to a narcissist for a while and I really disliked him the entire time they were together. I disliked his relationship with my sister and how unhappy he made her. And I hated how it seemed like he had everyone fooled except me. Everyone gravitated towards him, he was very charismatic and people naturally liked him and I hated how he painted himself as the victim in their divorce. 
But now that they're divorced and I've heard more about their therapy sessions leading to the divorce, I feel a really odd compassion for him. Narcissism is essentially a really extreme form of the ego protecting itself due to trauma. My sister and I had childhood trauma too and we both became really empathetic people because of it. Her ex went the opposite way because of trauma and lost all empathy because he was trying to protect himself as a child. 
Not excusing narcissism in adulthood or what they do to their victims. But the optimist in me likes to believe there is hope for change. I don't think many change but I do like to think it's at least possible if they figure out how to be more self aware.

I’m the case of the narcissist I knew, he had no idea. But I also had no idea until after I was done with him. Took me time to realize what he truly was. I bet if I ever confronted him about it he would deny it. He was “never wrong”, so I doubt he would have listened to negative things about himself.

They have no dammm clue to wha they do or say 2 weeks later.. tells you whaa?? They don’t care & play like they not doin nothin wrong.. let them tell it everyone else is one ..

So if they haven’t previously gone to therapy and been told the have narcissistic behavior, they may genuinely not know. The issue becomes do they care enough about it to change when they are informed.

I don’t understand how someone can’t see that they’re so full of themselves. Maybe some do and some honestly don’t know they are narcissistic.
