Routine is key, strict time schedule… less so.

Kind of both? My son is on a general schedule but that’s because it’s when he shows his sleepy cues. He wakes up between 7-7:30 (is woken up by 7:30 if he doesn’t wake on his own), he takes his nap between 12-3 (depends on when he wakes up in the morning and gets woken up by 3 if he doesn’t wake on his own), and goes to bed between 9-9:30.  We do have a little more leniency than we did when he was younger because usually 30 ish minutes doesn’t make a huge difference for him. He’s almost 2 1/2.
Now this may change when we welcome his baby brother in July.  But we will play it by ear until we settle into a new routine.

Not a strict schedule so to say but babies by that age have a pretty set routine! Their cues will fall around the same time!

We follow a strict nap time and bedtime routine. They are 3 and 21 months but we started the routine around 6 months for each of them. Of course when they drop a nap,  we adjust as needed to a new routine.

My little is 16m and while she still takes naps and I lay her down for them, the time of day can vary on her and if she’s more crabby earlier than she would normally go down then I’ll put her down a little earlier. Then there’s other times she’s not ready for a nap yet and I allow her to stay up a little longer. Like there’s somewhat of a schedule but nothing overly strict. We try and stick to a certain time for bedtime every night but sometimes even then times can vary and she either goes down a little earlier or I allow her to stay up longer, because she’s just going to be hanging out in her crib awake anyway. 
They really are no different than us and adults. Some days we’re more tired than others and some days we stay up later. The only difference is they’re little humans who aren’t allowed to make their own decisions yet, while we’re adults and we can.

I’ve had my 21 month old going down for a nap between 1 & 1:30p since he dropped to one nap when he was 9 or 10 months.

I would say super strict. But it’s more or less a schedule based on time more so “sleepy cues”. I feel like my daughter is like the energizer bunny but then the next moment she’ll turn around and have a melt down over nothing because she’s overtired. Her sleepy cues are definitely not as obvious as they once were.
