Can someone explain this?

So a family member recently passed away a week ago and I just found out so I asked when is the funeral? His daughter said it’s until next month because they have no room at the cemetery? Like what? Like there’s no space to bury them? Can someone who knows about this explain? How do they make room?

Is it the cemetery thats full or the mortuary ? I've heard of the mortuaries being full these days , especially due to covid & the rise in deaths period . But not the Cemeteries 🤔 . If it is the cemetery , how are they going to make space in a month without digging up graves or adding land ? Not being rude !! Serious question !!

My BIL died over two years ago and he's currently in an urn in a "borrowed" space in a cemetery. It's one of those places where your cremated remains are put in little wall capsules rather than a grave in the ground (according to google it's called a columbarium). My parents in law wanted him at this specific cemetery but he died unexpectedly and the waiting list on new wall spaces is years long. They have a friend who had pre-purchased his spot and was still healthy, so my BIL is currently in this borrowed spot waiting for his spot to open up. If the friend dies, my BIL will get evicted and he'll be back at home until his space is available. It happens.
I wouldn't stress about a one month delay - global supply chain is totally messed up at the moment, so it could be availability at the mortuary or funeral home, it could be something like availability of coffins, or it could be waiting for a space in the cemetery like with my BIL.

The other thought is that they don’t want you there, I’m not sure how close you were to them, but I would check obituary.com or type in the name and obituary, just in case they’re full of crap. Sometimes when it comes to people dying people come out of the woodwork‘s, because I think you’re entitled to things, and that’s usually when you figure out who actually cares about you and who doesn’t. Or they’re just looking for whatever they can get. When my mom‘s sister died, the first thing that the cousins did was go knock on the door at the house and try and kick out the people who live there, even though they took care of her and her death, and my other cousins were asking who’s getting the house, meanwhile the house is in my mothers name. We haven’t spoken to any of them nor did any of them care yet alone reach out or try and be helpful. So we haven’t spoken to them. I had another friend who when her mother died The family tried to ransacked the house and take whatever they could, unfortunately money brings out the worst in people. Hopefully this isn’t the case for you, and it is true, but I would also just double check with the funeral home, or obituary.com or the whatever website they use. If they particularly want that cemetery, it is a possibility, sometimes they have vaults and they stack one casket on top of another￼ Or they need permission from other family members to use the space, or maybe it’s a load of crap like I said. Good luck either way, I hope things work out and there’s no bad blood.

People have to buy lots at a cemetery and sometimes, those lots are already purchased and it takes a while to find one.

Cemeteries can run out of space. It’s not unlimited. Sometimes you have to postpone the funeral until you can make proper arrangements.
