How much destructiveness/roughness is normal in a young boy?
I feel like maybe my 4 year old is more destructive and rough than most. He breaks almost all his toys eventually. Takes them apart. Throws them around. I can’t leave books out because he doesn’t read them, he just wants to tear them up. Outside he will be taking sticks, trying to pop the pool, or running his car into the drainage spouts trying to rip the gutters off the side of the house. He is a very smart child, ahead of his peers, very communicative, but he is absolutely so incredibly destructive. When I watch him play with his peers they are typically playing “normally” with toys or playing outside on a swing set, but my son will not? He will be running off on his own throwing the toys around trying to make them break or digging in the dirt to throw on himself and make himself filthy on purpose. Last summer we bought our kids a $2,500 play set for the backyard, monkey bars, slide, rock wall, play house, and he has no interest in it like other kids. He will be at the bottom hitting it with a stick or digging in the mulch, trying to poke a hole in the slide, etc. When I ask him why he’s doing these things he has no answer for me. He says “I’m just playing mommy” and seems confused when I make him stop doing these things. He cried because I wouldn’t let him hit our window with rocks. Genuinely didn’t know what he was doing wrong. We have holes in our walls, doors, baseboards are all scuffed from him hitting them with toys, I can have absolutely nothing on shelves because he’ll try to break everything he can touch. Can someone more knowledgeable about child behavior explain this to me? I’m so confused why he is so destructive.
