Is having a registry for a 1 year old’s birthday gifts tacky?

Question

My baby is turning 1 soon and I don’t want to seem ungrateful but I just don’t want to receive multiples of something or things that he doesn’t play with (like all these stuffed animals that take up so much space). I’ve had my eyes on some toys and more practical things I’d like him to have but not sure if I should request those or just buy them myself. 
Am I being picky and ungrateful?
Ps: I’d probably present it as “if you’d like to bring a gift, here are some ideas: xxx”

I have some in-laws who’ve been petty about some weird stuff, but they’ve never been mad about a wishlist. In fact, they usually ask for it ahead of birthday/Christmas. I think as long as you call it a wishlist and not a registry, people don’t mind (even though it serves the same purpose). As long as you don’t appear ungrateful for gifts you get that weren’t on the list and you have different price points on your list, it’s fine.

He won’t even know or remember. Keep the things that are special for him to have and play with, regift and/or donate the rest. Our daycare has little parties for birthdays that we send in little gifts for each kid. When my kids have parties, doubles get put in the attic and I regift to the day are kids. Anything left at Christmastime gets donated. As the kids get older and people ask us what to get them, I give them clothes sizes and whatever the kids are into (tractors, dolls, etc) and then mention that $10 in a book or card would be plenty as they have bank accounts, too. It gives the hint the kids have a lot of toys already and we want to help them save up for the future. It helps keeps excessive toy gifts to a minimum.

For my family, we’ve all gotten into the habit of making Amazon lists for kids birthdays and Christmas. I love it because I can get my nephews something they actually like and clothes that actually fit. It doesn’t feel like an obligation to buy from the list, but it gives a great starting point. Most of the time, I only send it when someone asks for gift ideas for my daughter. My SIL will often include a link on her e-invite. I think it’s completely fine as long as you frame it as “here are some ideas if you’re looking to buy a gift” rather than “my kid requires a $100 cash gift in addition to a gift from this very expensive registry”. You can also add ideas to the list like “needs 2t summer clothes” so the party guest can still pick whatever they think is cute but know the correct size to buy.

I honestly prefer wishlists. Then I know I’m not wasting my money on something the child won’t like, will be tossed aside, thrown out, etc etc.

We do a registry at Christmas and birthdays. It’s SO NICE and my family all love it. My husband’s family is not into it and they don’t ask for it or look at it. And for Christmas my daughter got five (yes FIVE) of the exact same toy from his side of the family 😂 She also got loads of age inappropriate toys for her birthday and clothes that don’t fit and they keep asking me how she likes them, and I’ve (very politely) said I’ll let them know in a year or two when she can use them, and for right now we have them safely stored away.

I would much prefer to have a list put together for when people ask than have to scramble to come up with an idea on the spot. I also make it very clear that we absolutely do not expect anything but their company, but if they feel they must gift an item, these are the things we would prefer.

I’ve always appreciated Amazon wish lists for my nieces and nephews especially since we live in different states. Easy to just send a gift I know they will like but there are some people that really want to pick something out. I think if you just casually add it in there it should be fine.

With how easy it is to exchange stuff I don’t think I would do this personally but it’s not a bad idea if it’s presented like a gift suggestion list
