Would you support efforts to reduce unsolicited mail or bulk paper mail?

So not controversial in a scandal way, but … I don’t know about anyone else, but the amount of unsolicited paper mail I get is one of my biggest current annoyances (first world problems, I know)… I try to recycle what I can, but even just the process of sorting it is irritating. My biggest issue is the fact that we don’t need to waste even the energy it takes to recycle it. I do take some steps to get removed from lists, but it is not always easy.

On the other hand, paper mail is one of the most cost effective ways for small businesses or nonprofits to get their message out. So I DO get it and that the public post system is open to all. Also, I imagine some people really like getting mail in any form 🤷‍♀️

I still feel like there must be a middle ground.. limiting unsolicited mail to a certain amount of mailings in a timeframe? Having more productive opt-out options? Taxing the high-volume paper catalogs more?

I also hate management of reducing emails but that’s less annoying from an environmental side (if I was going to pick one to get rid of, the paper has got to go). Anyone else feel any way about this?

strange didn't realize the rest of the world didn't do this but in my country if we don't want that rubbish you can buy signs for your letter box that say "no junk mail"

Wow this is really interesting! I live in the US & junk mail comes through the postal service but this seems like it would be a great concept

I voted maybe. I don’t love restricting access to a public service. It’s a problem though. A higher mass mailings tax for companies and not for profits that generate more than a set amount. I don’t get much mail, but my poor mom gets so much mail sometimes the mailman literally can’t close her box door, and has to leave it piled up in the hallway. There’s really two types , and I’m pretty sure she’s being targeted for both because of her age. One is that she gets so many catalogs. They’re a little shady too. The products all have huge mark ups, and are clearly marketed to seniors. They’re not straight up scams though so, there’s not much that can be done. The other is large not for profits send her a ton of swag wanting donations. She gets address labels, calendars, notebooks, stickers. So much crap. It makes me seriously side eye how much Is going to direct service.

Omg yes! I’m pretty sex positive, but it’s always so unexpected. Like, Hmmmm do I need a new knee brace? *flips page* MASSIVE DILDO.

😂😂😂 It’s so random too! It’s like one minute your flipping through some Dr. Scholls and then it’s like, a whole page of ‘therapeutic dildos’

Maybe. I think opting out should be easier. I’d rather it go to a junk e-mail I can search through when I need coupons. I also really dislike the fact my info can be bought/sold as a targeted demographic. It’s one thing to campaign an EDDM (every door direct mail) and another to buy a list based on education, age, sex, interests, etc. While I understand the benefits to businesses, I still don’t like it.

Yes!!! I’d support all of it!Junk emailsJunk mailSpam calls and texts I’m already on the “do not call” list but I still get calls and texts regardless. I’d also support legislation where the dmv wouldn’t be allowed to sell our personal information to data brokers etc … why is this legal? They get paid for OUR information and you can’t opt out. Where is my check? Lol I also think peoples home address, email and phone numbers shouldn’t be “public” information. Like what if you have a stalker ?

They could use 100% recycled paper and thermal printing instead of traditional ink printing. Though I'm not sure the process behind producing everything that goes into creating a thermal printer and if in the end any actual environmental impact has been made. Good question. We produce so much waste as is. With digital taking over small businesses could switch to locally targeted digital ads. Like the recommended for you lineup on Facebook. Making the switch to fully digital marketing would probably take a minute before they saw any real changes. But eventually it would probably be cheaper than paper adverts. As well as being in front of more eyes because most times I just toss paper adverts right into the recycle without even glancing twice at them. Especially from credit card companies.

I've made efforts to reduce the mail I get, and it's working. I think there are no junk mail lists, but I've also used their "business reply mail" envelopes to send them a letter saying not to send me stuff 🙃 and they actually don't afterwards! I go paperless at every opportunity. I hate clutter and I hate waste.

I found not to even bring it in the house. I go through the mail standing by my recycle bin and it goes right in it. If it came in the house it would pile up and I would annoy myself. I will say I don’t get a lot anymore. Coupon/flyer packets come one day a week. Every so often a store catalog which I can unsubscribe from. I think the most are credit card offers and because it’s nice out rn advertising for lawn/painting/mosquito spraying etc

I live in an apartment complex and I don't mind the random coupons we get but it's completely pointless to get advertising for lawn care, bug spraying, internet services and such. I get these so often and it's gotten to the point that it's actually annoying. Unless I move or and but a house I have nothing to do with these. I guess I could pay for my own internet but we have free (good) internet by living here

If I had a paper shredder I would just shred unwanted or unimportant mail. Make it into pretty art projects or just recycle it.
