US implements new 988 mental health crisis line

So the federal government is spending millions funding this to both improve accessibility for mental health assistance and help redirect mental health emergencies away from 911/police response. Personally, since this particular demographic is at 16x the risk of being killed by police, I think shifting as much of the response away from police as possible is great. Though I'm already seeing some rumblings about it being understaffed and underfunded, and complaints that the lack of any sort of consistent mental health resources from state-to-state or even city-to-city is going to make it difficult to successfully refer callers for follow-up services.

I'm just curious on peoples thoughts about this — whether other countries have perspectives on how they handle it, and if anyone sees any other pitfalls or feels it's not the right direction/worth funding.
