Do reservist get the same medical as active duty?

I’ve read and heard different things and I’ll read more of course (I just like asking other people questions and hearing experiences). Do reservists receive the same medical and dental coverage as those on active duty? Do they only receive medical coverage when they are deployed? Or does it just cost more? We’re trying to decide on AF reserve vs active for my husband. We have one baby.

We have tricare reserve select, there’s two different tricare reserve things but with select you don’t need referrals or anything to see off base doctors and the yearly deductible for us is only $56 for the family plan.

You would have to sign up for Tricare Teserve Select. It costs about $230 per month for family coverage and there are deductibles, co pays, etc on top of that. When they go on active duty orders like a deployment, then they receive Tricare Prime (same as active duty) for that time period.

Active Duty Tricare coverage is cost free (dental for dependents usually has co-pays if you have to see a civilian provider). However, this shouldn't be the determining factor of active duty vs reserves. There's a lot involved with going active duty that will affect your family. For years.
