When do babies start feeding themselves

Question

My son is barely a year old and throws a fit if I don’t let him have the spoon. So I give it to him thinking he’ll try to feed himself but he just throws the food and plays with the spoon

My daughter feeds herself and has been since 6-7 months.
She is not great with utensils yet which is completely normal! She’s 11 months! I can hand her a loaded spoon and she can bring it to her mouth. Does she sometimes drop it? Yes. Does she sometimes throw it down? Yes. 
I mostly encourage my girl to eat with her hands! I want her to feel all the textures! We still practice with preloaded spoons and forks! 
I believe around 18m or so is when they become more coordinated to use utensils themselves!

My daughters used a spoon and a fork since a lil before a year. Not very good at a year, but she had the  idea of it and would pick her food up and stick it on the spoon then shove it in her mouth. Its a lesrned skill you just gotta let him do it. He may play with it, he might uses it sometimes. It really is a skill they have to devolope.
