So do women have fluid come out of their vagina when they cum? Like there's been a couple times I thought I had orgasmed or gotten close but nothing came out of me. I feel really good and then my whole body completely relaxes and I almost fall asleep? Does that count as an orgasm or not???

An orgasm is the release of tension that built up in your body and mind during sexual stimulation in waves of contractions, pleasure and sometimes heat. The definition of an orgasm does not include the release of any fluid for a female, but it may happen during orgasm. It is however also possible to squirt at other times, like when you are penetrated, when your clitoris is rubbed, or somewhere in the middle of sexual activity.

There are two different things that can happen: 
•	Female ejaculation 
•	Squirting/gushing

These are not the same things. Let me explain:

The amazing thing is that women and men’s bodies are much more alike than you would think. When a baby starts to develop in the womb, you cannot even tell if it is a boy or a girl. They look exactly alike. They have the same types of tissue. Later, secondary characteristics start to develop and form in different spots, but it is still the same tissue in a girl and a boy. For example, he gets a penis, she gets a clitoris from the same tissue. He gets testicles, she gets ovaries. He gets a foreskin, she gets a clitoral hood, she gets the skin on her outer lips, he gets the skin of his scrotum, she gets the cleft, he gets the line on his scrotum where the skin is joined in that spot, and so on….

Why is this similarity important? Well, it turns out that the same tissue that forms the male prostate settles along the girl’s urethra to form what is known as the para-urethral glands (also called the Skene’s glands, or the female prostate). What does the male prostate do? It manufactures semen. In a woman it manufactures what is known as female ejaculate. It is a fluid that looks the same, feels the same, tastes the same and sometimes even comes out in the same quantity as male semen, because it comes from the same glands. This fluid also has the typical prostate chemical marker (PSA) that is also present in male semen. Most women do not develop the ability to ejaculate visibly, however. Very few do, but from research, it seems like most women will secrete a drop or two during sex. This fluid is sweet and pleasant tasting, unlike squirt or gushing fluid.

A man has Cowper’s glands, responsible for lubrication and the cleaning of his urethra before he ejaculates (the so called precum or pre-ejaculate fluid). A woman has the same glands around her vaginal opening, but called the Bartholin’s glands, for lubrication and cleaning around the vaginal entrance.

You may wonder what about the g spot, the so-called spot that a woman can stimulate to get an ejaculation or to squirt? Well, it turns out that the g spot does not exist as an anatomical entity. We have known from the late 1990’s that there is no structure there in our anatomy, no special tissue, no extra nerve endings, no organ, nothing. But we did find out through scientific studies that the clitoris is a massive organ. It goes deep into your body, and it is about 15cm long. Scientists now think that what was previously thought to be the so-called g spot, it actually is the deep structures of the 2 clitoral legs. Some women can stimulate them through the vaginal wall, some cannot. It may also become easier to stimulate it as we get older and the tissue in that area loses some of its volume.

What about all the stories and videos of women gushing and squirting cups full of fluid, and soaking beds? It turns out that a woman’s bladder fills up rapidly during sexual stimulation due to massive increase in blood flow and her metabolism speeding up. We know that thanks to MRIs and ultrasounds and women that was willing to have sex or masturbate in these machines so that we could study what happened inside them. This causes that feeling of having to pee in a woman. This fluid is almost pure urine, but it is clearer due to the speed it forms at. Once it dries, it will have that telltale urine smell. Even every other day, dark yellow urine or urine that smells means you are dehydrated. For a long time, some researchers have been confused about this fluid. It will often have a chemical marker called PSA. This is a chemical excreted by the prostate, male, and female. So, when they measured PSA in the squirting fluid, they thought it was female ejaculate from the female prostate. Later measurements with more accurate measurements showed the squirting fluid to be at least 99% urine with between 1% and 0.3% of the fluid with PSA.

A woman’s system for keeping in urine is also very weak compared to a man. It is just the one muscle group that forms the sphincter muscle that closes the bladder. And when pressure is placed where the so-called g spot was thought to be, pressure is placed on that muscle group, and viola, squirting results when the muscles cannot keep it up. Pressure there will also put pressure on the bladder that further causes the release of the urine. Since the early 2000’s when researchers seriously started testing squirt fluid, it was also found that it is basically urine. And added to it, there is only one place that much fluid can come from - the bladder. There is not a single other gland or organ that can manufacture that much fluid in such a brief time. And the fluid volume is too large for it to come from any other place around there. Even if you hollow out the female prostate and fill the space with fluid, you cannot fit that much fluid in there

Squirting or gushing is also not always related to an orgasm. It can happen at penetration or before an orgasm, or even when there is no orgasm. An orgasm does make the muscles in the region contract and release several times, which explains why it also often happens in waves during orgasm.

Other conditions like stress incontinence (mostly from natural childbirth or other injury), an overactive bladder, aging can contribute to it, or putting pressure on the bladder and sphincter muscle. These conditions will affect mature women more than teens, which may explain why some women start to squirt and gush in their late 20’s or later.

What to do about it? Typically, nothing. If you have incontinence at other times, a doctor can help you, but if not, nothing. Squirting and gushing is part of a woman’s sexual repertoire. Many men actively search out squirting and enjoys it with their partners. It is like a badge of honor if they can make their partner squirt. Squirting has no health risk, and it often increases the female’s enjoyment of the orgasm. 

Other Fluids:

There are also other fluids. When you get aroused, the swelling walls of your vagina will put pressure on the cells in the lining. This will squeeze out a plasma that we call arousal fluid. Its function is to lubricate your vagina for easy penetration and neutralize the acidic environment in your vagina to protect sperm.

You have cervical mucus that helps sperm swim up your cervix and seal your cervix when you are not fertile to avoid germs from entering your uterus. This is typically the discharge you see in your panties every day (or many days).

You also have two glands next to your vaginal opening called Bartholin’s glands. These will secrete a few drops of clear fluid to sterilize and lubricate your vaginal entrance during stimulation. This is the equivalent of precum (pre-ejaculate) from the analogous Cowper’s glands in a male.

If your partner ejaculated inside you, his semen will come out as a clear or milky fluid. His sperm will escape from the semen and attempt to swim up your cervix to fertilize your egg. Everything that is left will just drip or run out over a period of hours. This fluid is called back-flow.

If you are close to your period (before or after), sexual activity and orgasms can cause your uterus lining to shed its lining early or to start shedding again. Your uterus moves around during sexual arousal, and it can contract during your orgasm to cause this early or late shedding and squeezing out some menstrual debris left in your uterus. 

So, in short (and finally), if it does not bother you or your partner, there is nothing to do about it. Enjoy the pleasure it brings to your both.
