It’s called the newborn screening. It’s to test for certain diseases that don’t “show up” or have like common symptoms. That’s how we learned both my kids have a genetic disease that has a 75% mortality rate because it’s not caught until day 5-7 (whenever the results come in) and many are in a coma by day 6. My sons are alive and well because of this test.

They would still have to have a legal reason and go through due process including a court order to get it. It’s not like they’re taking it and using it illegally

According to the ACLU: 
There is a lawsuit filed in New Jersey regarding police subpoenaing a newborn blood sample to investigate a 1996 cold case. Currently, “there is no uniform national policy for how newborn screening is conducted. Each state sets its own policies governing which diseases it tests for and the length of time the sample is kept.” 
So while it is a concern of what could potentially happen, it’s not currently happening. Newborn screeners is required in 49 states and is the most successful public health program we have.

Heel stick is common yes but all this other crap is pretty ridiculous. Heel sticks are usually used to check blood sugar levels, jaundice, and other bacterial infections at birth. It’s done in the heel because babjes are so small that they can’t easily get finger pricks done like an adult blood test. Your baby will have their blood taken many times in their life- think of all the times you had your blood taken in pregnancy alone to check for things like HIV, gestational diabetes, if you did the NIPT test… if the government wanted your baby’s blood trust me they could get it. They could get it from the placenta or the leftover blood from birth if they REALLY cared. They don’t haha. I’m married to a bit of a conspiracy theorist and even this one he would find pretty silly
