My toddler forgot how to write her name over the summer. Is this concerning?

She just turned 4 a couple weeks ago. Was writing her name just fine earlier this year while in preschool, but she seems to have forgotten how to do it over the summer. I just had her write her name on a card and she had no idea how to do it. It took like 5 mins of practicing for her to be able to write her name again. Is that concerning?

when they’re this young I’d encourage to have her write it everyday to help remember it. She is only 4

It’s totally normal. I’ve been a pre-K teacher for years and it’s pretty typical for children to regress in the off months. As a teacher, I would encourage you to please have them practice some school stuff! Have them write their name once a day for example. Or even only when they’re drawing. Include it as part of the routine best as you can. It doesn’t have to be long and it shouldn’t be forced, but they shouldnt completely forget a skill. They do bounce back but it takes a lot of valuable time for the teacher when they should be moving towards the next goal. You got this!

Its completely normal to forget skills when they arent practiced regularly which is why schools send home reading lists and whatnot for the summer for older children. Studies show that child lose skills over long periods of time when they arent used

It’s summer slide! I’m a teacher and this is super common. My son is almost 5 and isn’t starting school until K next year. Our local school, he has to be 4 before September 1st and he wasn’t so we didn’t send him to preschool and are choosing not to. He’ll have to wait until he’s 5 before Sept 1 to start K so he won’t go until next year and just skip preschool. It sounds like she’s a bit ahead of the curve anyway and I’m sure she’ll have it down again soon!

Summer slide. My mom required me to do school work all summer to lessen the impact of being out of school for three months. Just simple workbooks type stuff or crafts / projects so I could practice the skills.

I think it’s ok. It’s kind of the same for us when we were in school. We’d remember stuff during the year and then summer break hit and we go back in the fall and seemed to have forgotten almost everything. Once she starts practicing her writing again I’m sure she will remember it.
