So I am sexual active with my boyfriend and before him I've never masturbated so I don't know what it feels like when I'm going to have an orgasm!

Men reach a point of no return where they will orgasm, no matter what. Unfortunately, this is not the case for a woman. We can “lose” our orgasms right up to the point where it started, so there is no sure way to know if you are going to orgasm or not. It is not unusual for a woman to not orgasm every time. There are many reasons for that, but with a little effort you should be able to orgasm most of the times.
Orgasm is your own personal laboratory where you can learn what works for your body, and how you react to different types of sexual stimulation. It will also teach you to recognize your orgasms. Sex with a partner is a really bad place to try and learn how your body works, because you have very little control over the stimulation.
It sounds like we may have to fill in some gaps that sex-ed left out for you:
First a bit about your anatomy. Your clitoris is your main pleasure organ. Just that little tip (glans) that you can see and feel is the most sensitive organ on a human body. It has over 8,000 nerve endings in that little tip. Your clitoris has no other job. Pleasure and orgasms are it.
Your vagina is mainly for making and delivering babies. It is mostly devoid of nerve endings, especially deeper inside. This is to protect you from trauma during child birth, infections, menstruation and penetration. It is an exit for discharge, menstrual flow and babies. It is a safe place for your partner to leave his sperm to get you pregnant, and it is made to stimulate his penis to make him ejaculate.
Having an orgasm from just intercourse is actually more rare than you would think. For most of us, our clitoris is to far from our vaginal opening and during intercourse, it gets too little stimulation. This is the case for about 70 to 80% of all women. This does not mean you should not orgasm during intercourse. It just means that you need to learn some techniques to get the stimulation to your clitoris during intercourse.
But masturbation is really where you learn about your body and how to orgasm. How you get to orgasm is pretty specific to you and your body. You have to take the time to explore and discover that process. It is not unusual to need something different when you start touching yourself and have it change the closer to your orgasm you get. That is why you need to invest the time to explore and discover yourself.
Your clitoris is very sensitive (remember those 8,000 nerve endings?). So we usually need very light and indirect touch when we start, ending with hard, fast and direct touching close to orgasm. You can rub over, around and on your clitoris, you han squeeze, press, grind it, you can vibrate or tap around or on it.
To orgasm you need to stop thinking about other things. Get your thoughts out of your head and into your body where you feel and sense what is going on in your body. The idea is to just keep on doing what feels good and make that feeling better. But be present in the moment, do not let your mind wander off. Fantasizing during sex or masturbation may help you get more aroused and make it easier to orgasm.
It sounds like we should also discuss what an orgasm is. During stimulation, tension and stress builds up in your muscles and brain. Electrical signals flow from those over 8,000 nerve endings into your brain. Energy keeps on building u in your body and brain. At some point, your brain gets overwhelmed and it goes into a short trance-like state. This allows the energy, tension and stress to be released in waves of contractions, pleasure, spasms, and mybe heat that radiates outwards from your clitoris and/or uterus throughout your body. This will get weaker and weaker over a few seconds until you are left happy, satisfied, relaxed, glowing and maybe even sleepy. During the buildup to your orgasm, your breathing and heart rate will race, you may be experiencing involuntary spasms in your limbs and body, and you may feel frustrated and crave the release of your orgasm. This is all normal.
It is very important that you make sure you are well lubricated and relaxed. You may need some personal lubricant from your local supermarket, pharmacy or favorite online store. 
Your brain is very important in your orgasm. You have to stop criticizing yourself, stop worrying about the daily grind, stop worrying about how you look, or what people think about you, and especially with a partner, totally give up control, open up your full vulnerability, and trust him fully. I think you get the idea. During sex and masturbation, only the pleasure and intimacy should be allowed inside your brain and body. No doubts, no worry, no children, no work, no house tasks, no homework, nothing.
Once you can orgasm reliably by yourself, you can move to orgasms with your partner. Special techniques are to tilt your pelvis with him inside you and grind, rub and squeeze your clitoris on his body. This is easier when you are on top.  So not just the in/out up/down of normal sex. You can also use your or his fingers, or a small toy on your clitoris. This is easier with him behind you. There should be no time given to insecurities and self doubt with a partner. It is about your and his pleasure and intimacy, not anything else.

You should masturbate and get yourself to orgasm first so you know what you like and don't like. Or you can explore with your boyfriend and hopefully you get there. A lot of women can't orgasm from penetration alone and rub their clit throughout or when they're close to an orgasm. It's a buildup of a really good sensation is the best way I can describe it. Also you can have a small to large orgasm. Not all orgasms feel the same
