What to do?

My son attends a private preschool and they’re very strict on their attendance. You can only miss 3 days a month or you lose your spot and they will replace you with someone on their waiting list. (And they have a ton of kids on the waiting list). My son has been sick with a random virus, not strep, flu or Covid, but he has been running a low grade fever for 4 days. His doctor is not concerned, as he is still drinking, eating, and is just a little more tired than usual. However the director of his preschool said he cannot miss another day or he loses his spot. This morning his temp is 99.3. It has ranged from that to 101. Should I send him tomorrow…? He doesn’t have any other symptoms except the elevated temp/tiredness. No coughing or sneezing.

I would leave the school if theyd prefer kids come to school sick and risk getting other kids sick 🙄 I can totally understand unexcused absences, but kids get sick a lot their first couple years of school, most schools say 'Please stay home and keep everyone healthy" or maybe ask a reason for the absence or drs note if it's a long absence, but the administrators at your school sound like cockie power trip a-holes if theyre essentially forcing sick attendance or get expelled 😡 who the hell do they think they are???? I would give them a piece of my mind and take my money elsewhere!!!

I’d start looking for another preschool because it’s not gonna get any better as the year goes on. It sounds like they have no regard for the health of their students (or staff) if they want everyone to come in sick. But I guess in the meantime send him if he feels ok. I feel like this is a situation where given the attendance policy other parents are assuming everyone’s sending their kids in knowing they might be contagious so they’ve accepted that risk.

Ask your dr for a note - I doubt in the policy they can revoke your admission status over medical matters.

It’s not a fever until 100.4, so if it stays below that all day send him. However, that rule is ridiculous if you’re paying for it which I assume you are with it being private. My kids miss 3 days regularly just because I want to keep them home sometimes. As long as I pay, they keep their spot.

Are you sure that the policy doesn't exclude illness and you're just not sending doctor's notes? My son's preschool has a similar policy but exceptions are made for illness. You have to have a doctor's note stating the child is ill though. If your child is ill and you don't have a doctor's note, it counts as an unexcused absence at my son's preschool and my other son's elementary school. They don't just take your word that he is sick. I've never heard of a school or preschool that will kick a child our for excuses absences with doctor's notes. 
But if what you're saying is right, I'd pull my son out of school immediately. Requiring kids who have doctor's notes saying they're sick to return to school is a recipe for disaster. Especially during an ongoing pandemic. I would not feel safe with my child in that environment and children do not absorb information very well when they don't feel well.

That’s incredibly irresponsible of the school. I’m a teacher and worked in private schools and this is wrong on so many levels. As a teacher, I wouldn’t even want to work there. If the kids are sick, and you can keep them home, you should. My kids currently have Covid and it’s a crazy big pain in the ass with work for me but we are  making it work and I’m counting the days they can go back to daycare lol If a parent can and wants to keep them home, and I know it can be a pain, and it should be respected.

I kinda had the same issue with my sons school. They are only allowed to miss one week of school the whole year with or without an excuse. He had missed a few days ￼for normal sicknesses and then back in December he had broken his leg and he missed 2 weeks of school for that and had a bunch of doctors appointments (he has a rare bone disease) so I was forced to send him into school if he was sick just so he was there for attendance and then he’d go to the nurse and id have to go pick him up. It was ridiculous. So I’d say just send him and if you have to go pick him back up then do just that. It’s a crappy situation though.
