Are they fixed? I would do that first before rehoming if they are not

I would try and figure out what’s causing the issue first. Rehiring an “aggressive” cat is almost impossible and giving them to a shelter is basically a death sentence. Is the cat fixed? Unfixed cats can be aggressive and it nearly always improves after they’re fixed. Aggression in cats nearly always comes from either anxiety or play aggression (mishandled Hunter instincts). Occasionally you do get a “special needs” cat with a legitimate chemical imbalance (I have one). That’s harder to work around but still generally doable if you really love the animal and are willing to put in the work. 
For all three causes you start in the same place. Take a really good look at the environment from a cats perspective and figure out where the stressors are. Do they have enough space including several hiding spaces at various heights where they can get away and feel safe? Are they being played with enough (cats are natural hunters. If you don’t give them a healthy outlet for those natural tendencies they WILL come out in undesirable ways)? Are there other cats coming around your house (even just outside) that this cat can see or smell that might be making them anxious? 
Pay really close attention to the “unprovoked” attacked and you’ll likely find they aren’t really unprovoked from the cats perspective. If they feel trapped in any way that can result in “aggression”. So if they feel cornered or are being messed with or sensing something is off in their environment it can trigger them but seem like it’s coming out of nowhere to a causal observer. 
There are behaviorists that can help you figure out triggers if you get stumped. 
Also try calming collars and plug in pheromone dispensers. They can be really helpful.

I said no I wouldn’t keep it, but we actually owned a pretty savage cat for like 8 or 9 years until he got sick and we had to put him down. He would attack you for literally walking past him. And he wasn’t a rescue, my grandmother’s cat had kittens and he was one of them so we know it was just his personality.
